Dapitan St. James Church
by Jaiza Jumawan on

I had the chance to visit the historic church in Dapitan. It was originally constructed in the year 1871 under Rev. Fr. Juan Gelabert. The Dapitanons rendered local materials and voluntary labor as the construction finished. It is in this church where our National hero Jose P. Rizal hear mass every Sunday during his exile. The St. James Church was named after the city's patron saint, St. James the Greater.

Repaired and renovated in 1904, the original galvanized iron wall was replaced with the present solid masonry. The wooden floor was as well changed into mortar. It was then completed in 1909 under the Parish priest Rev. Fr. Antonio Obach S.J. with the same assistance from the people as in the original construction.

In 1921, the remodeling of the mortar floor into concrete took place as well as the improvisation of the sanctuary. In 1944, the Japanese soldiers used this church as a sleeping quarters for about 5 days. Later in 1964, the church underwent another major reconstruction. The entire structure was changed to reinforced concrete. The inauguration of St. James Church occurred on July 23, 1967.

Its facade has a Gothic Arch entrance and columns. It also has a Pediment as well as two bell towers. The Running Bond concrete pattern adds to the aesthetic value of the entire structure.

If you run into some Architectural terms, here are its definitions:

Apse - A semi-circular area usually located at the far end and houses the main altar.
Arcade - A series of Arches supported by columns.
Facade - The frontage of a structure or building.
Gothic Arch - A type of Arch that has a pointed arch formed by two arc segments.
Mortar - A mixture consisting of usually lime and cement that bonds stones and bricks.
Nave - The main part of the church that accommodates a congregation.
Pediment - A triangular area found at the frontage of the roof in a classical structure.
Pulpit - Raised platform intended for the preacher.
Reinforced Concrete - A type of construction where rebars are embedded passively unto the concrete to increase its tensile strength.
Running Bond - Common brick pattern which consists of rows of brick or concrete where its ends lie on the midpoint of the opposite brick.

The St. James Church in Dapitan is one of the most astonishing churches in Mindanao. With its historical value, it will surely serve as an emblem of both heritage and Christianity located at the heart of the city.

Baking Basics: Mini Cheesecake
by Jaiza Jumawan on

I had the chance to bake with my friends and this quick experience taught me the basics in baking a Cheesecake. This is a very easy way to bring out the chef in you in 9 simple ways. To start it off, here are the ingredients you'll need:

  • Grahams
  • Eggs
  • Cream Cheese
  • Cornstarch
  • Vanilla
  • Sugar
  • Lemons

1) Begin with making the base of the cheesecakes;
Crush the Grahams in a bowl and add eggs.

2) Mix to achieve a crunchy and firm texture.

3) Create a thin layer in the cupcake molder for the base.

4) Start making the body of the cheesecake. Add the cream cheese
into a bowl and batter until it softens.

5) Add a small amount of Vanilla syrup, Cornstarch and
a spoonful of sugar.

6) To give a zesty flavor, add some lemons. Batter.

6) After battering, add some eggs to achieve
soft creamy cheesecake texture.

7) Batter the mixture until a creamy substance is attained. Mix thoroughly.

8) Pour the mixture into place and bake in the oven for
about 15 minutes or more at approx. 160 degrees.

Yaki Mix: Irasshaimase!
by Jaiza Jumawan on

Enjoy Japanese cuisines in a buffet style restaurant.

Sumptuous meals, luxurious interior, wide variety of options and.. unlimited serving? All these may be simply coined into this must-try restaurant; Yaki Mix. As a food junkie, you wouldn't dare to miss out this place that offers Japanese dishes; name it from sushi, maki, and sashimi. Aside from an eat-all-you-can Japanese meal, don't forget to try out some Chinese and Korean dishes. Nevertheless, I must say that the highlight of this resto is not the food served for you but the dishes you cook for yourself! Yes, 'cause you can bring out the Chef in you as you grill in your own table!

The hanging chandelier-like deco gives a unique and grand impression

Intricate design
Irasshaimase! (いらっしゃいませ!) which means "Welcome to the store!" is the first thing you hear as you enter this elegant grillin' place. The best seats in my opinion are the ones near the buffet table. The amazing and fun smokeless grill is safe and is impressively topped with olive oil (one of the safest cooking oil). As you get cozy and comfortable, don't hesitate to devour on some grilled dishes and Japanese meals which are worth every penny. Finally, fill in your foodie pleasure with unlimited drinks that sums up your memorable stay.

Colorful yet flavorful Japanese recipes line up the buffet table. However, this may not be everyone's cup of tea. Nonetheless, other non-Japanese mouth watering dishes are served here.

Lastly, a splurge on desserts and sweets would complete the ultimate Yaki Mix experience. Nothing could be more perfect than being surrounded with chocolates, cakes and crepes!

So, are your taste buds craving for these yet? This is definitely another restaurant in Davao worth trying. Located in 2nd level Abreeza Mall, J.P. Laurel Ave. Bajada Davao city, you could now enjoy unlimited dishes at an acceptable price.
